According to motoring publication Autocar, officials at Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg headquarters in Germany have dubbed the project the Ruggdzz – this is a working title derived from the word ‘rugged’.

The 4x4 is speculated to join VW’s ID line-up of all-electric models in 2023 (in production form).

Autocar says its sources claim the rumoured model could result in a ‘number of derivatives’, such as a hardcore, ultra-rugged version featuring ‘roof-mounted spotlights’.

The Ruggdzz will sit alongside the similar ID.4 but take on a boxier shape and great off-road ability. The ID.4, which will lean on the more conventional side of the ID range, is set to be unveiled at the Detroit motor show in June.

As well as the Ruggdzz and ID 4, the ID Buzz, an electric campervan, is also on its way to showrooms – albeit in production guise – while the ID. Buggy is yet to be confirmed for production release.

The Ruggdzz is said to be a part of the German manufacturer’s 30-strong SUV line-up planned to be in full swing by the middle of the decade.
