The Volkswagen brand is synonymous with campervans, and even after decades of hugely popular campervans produced bearing the iconic VW badge, the brand continues to evolve and innovate. The Volkswagen California is a prime example of this. While the VW California may have been released 30 years ago the range continues to expand and remains a go-to choice for those looking for an approved used campervan.

In August 2003, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles launched the VW California with a design based on the Volkswagen Transporter. The Volkswagen California range evolved in 2007 with the introduction of an all-new California Beach model featuring a pop-top bed.The California Campervan offers the perfect combination of attractive exterior and interior comfort. This winning combination makes it the ideal vehicle for either a day trip to the beach, a weekend of Angling or a week-long road trip.
2019 saw the launch of the VW T6.1 California. The all-new California is available in two trim levels; Coast, and the top-of-the-range Ocean. The Beach trim level was discontinued when the all-new VW T6.1 California was launched in 2019. Both of the trim levels feature a range of driver aids, including electrically power-assisted steering (EPAS), six airbags, lane-keeping assist, plus automatic parking, to name just a few. The top of the range Ocean trim now has an electro-hydraulic pop-up roof to replace the manual system which remains in the Coast trim level.

The California 6.1 has been on the market for more than 30 years and continuously evolved and improved in this time, making it one of the most popular and successful camper vans of its kind. Is unmistakable design remains true to the California heritage, but has been sharpened by the dynamic front grille and bumper, as well as LED headlights, with LED taillights, sporty alloy wheels and a wide choice of classy exterior colour options.
There are plenty of reasons to buy a campervan, including family holidays and spontaneous adventures away but is a VW California right for you and worth the investment? If you pick a VW Cali you’ll find that its:

2019 saw the launch of the brand-new, and seriously impressive, Volkswagen Grand California based on the VW Crafter. This motor home has an incredible array of features and has everything you would expect from your home-from-home on wheels, plus a whole lot more.
The Volkswagen Grand California is available in a choice of two sizes; 600 or 680. Both models are incredibly spacious inside and even feature a separate wet room. The Grand California comes equipped with a kitchen featuring a twin gas hob, freezer compartment, 70-litre fridge, and sink. The 600 option features a raised roof, which can be used to create an optional additional sleeping space for two, meaning that a total of four people can sleep in the 600 model. The 680 model does not have this feature and comfortably accommodates two people in its spacious interior.
The Grand California features a 2.0-litre TDi turbodiesel engine, with front-wheel drive as standard. However, four-wheel drive is also available as an option. Both the 600 and 680 trim levels feature 17” silver alloys, a Discover Media navigation system, electronically controlled air conditioning, and leather-wrapped heated steering wheels. Both the California Beach and Ocean have their perks, it really comes down to your preferences and how you like to camp.
In this video we’ll take you through the differences to help you pick.

The California Beach is perfect for travelers who want a versatile, entry level camper that offers freedom and flexibility without compromising comfort. This trim level is designed with simplicity and style in mind, making it ideal for weekend getaways or short road trips with family or friends.
(approximately 2,000 x 1,500mm)

The California Ocean is the premium trim level, offering a true home away from home experience. With advanced features for maximum comfort and convenience, the Ocean is ideal for long trips, extended camping, or anyone looking for the highest luxury in a camper van.

A mid-range trim that offers the full campervan experience. It includes a pop-up roof with an upper bed, built-in kitchen with gas hob, sink, and fridge, plus front swivel seats and a second fold-out bed in the rear. It's perfect for regular campers who want a balance of features and value.

The Volkswagen California delivers a relaxed and capable driving experience, well-suited to both long road trips and everyday use. Most versions are powered by a reliable 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine, offered in a range of outputs to suit different needs. The entry-level options are ideal for steady cruising, while the more powerful variants, like the 150PS and 199PS models, provide plenty of pull when carrying passengers or gear. There’s a choice between a manual gearbox and a smooth-shifting DSG automatic, depending on the model. Many versions are also available with 4MOTION all-wheel drive, which is a real bonus if you’re planning to travel in all weather or venture beyond paved roads. Despite its size, the California feels composed on the road, with well-weighted steering and a quiet cabin that makes long journeys comfortable and enjoyable.
