UK law requires a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, around the complete circumference of the tyre. This is the absolute legal minimum—driving with less than 1.6mm is illegal and can result in fines of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per defective tyre.

However, we strongly recommend replacing tyres when they reach 3mm of remaining tread. Testing shows that stopping distances in wet conditions increase significantly once tread depth falls below 3mm. At 3mm, your tyres still provide good safety margins in all weather conditions. Waiting until the legal minimum of 1.6mm before replacing tyres compromises your safety, particularly in wet weather.

We use professional digital tread depth gauges that provide accurate measurements to within 0.1mm. Our technicians measure multiple points across each tyre's tread—inside, centre, and outside edges—to identify both the shallowest point and any uneven wear patterns.

Just let us know when booking or when you arrive that you'd like the spare checked too. If it's a space-saver or emergency spare, we'll verify it meets the requirements for temporary use.

If your tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning light is illuminated, definitely book a free check as soon as possible. The light indicates that at least one tyre has significantly low pressure, which could be caused by:

• A slow puncture
• A faulty valve
• A sensor malfunction
• Natural pressure loss (common in cold weather)

During your free check, we'll identify which tyre(s) triggered the warning, investigate the cause, and advise on the appropriate action.
