Tell Me About the Motability Program

The Motability program is a government-funded program that allows people in that have a disability to exchange their weekly mobility allowance for funds to lease a car. Using this towards wheelchair accessible vehicles, cars with adaptations for disabilities, or mobility scooters can help you regain some of your independence. You can also appoint three other people to drive for you in the event that your disability prevents you from driving at all.

Because owning a car can be expensive, the Motability program also covers servicing and maintenance, insurance, annual taxes, and breakdown coverage. This can greatly reduce the cost of owning a car and makes it possible for more people than ever to take charge of their transportation. You will be responsible for the oil, gas, and screen washes that your car needs. You will also be responsible for paying 5p for every mile over the 60,000 miles allotted for the three-year lease. You will also have to pay any speeding tickets, parking tickets, or insurance claims in relation to the car.

Choosing the Best Motability MPV for your Needs?

Selecting the perfect multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) on the Motability scheme is a big decision, and it’s important to ensure it meets your individual needs as well as those of your family. With so many MPVs on offer, understanding the key factors to consider will make the process a lot simpler and more rewarding. Here's a breakdown of vital points to guide you in choosing the best Motability MPV:

  • Assess Your Space Requirements - If you rely on a wheelchair or have large equipment to transport, opting for an MPV with ample cargo space is crucial. Look for vehicles that can easily accommodate your equipment without compromising comfort or safety. Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs), a specific type of MPV, are perfect for this and can include ramps, lifts, or lowered floors, depending on your needs. Before committing, confirm the measurements of your equipment and check if the MPV boot space aligns with your requirements. For example, larger MPVs like the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi can provide a generous amount of room and flexibility.
  • Plan for Modifications and Accessibility - Do you need vehicle adaptations such as hand controls, swivel chairs, or pedal modifications? If so, check with the dealership or your Motability specialist to ensure your desired MPV is compatible with these features. It’s better to confirm upfront if additional modifications can be made rather than discovering later that your chosen model doesn’t allow for essential adaptations.
  • Think About Passenger Comfort - For families, the number of available passenger seats is often a critical feature. Large MPVs typically offer six or seven seats, perfect for larger families or group travel. However, if you’ll primarily use the car solo or with occasional passengers, a smaller MPV like the VW Touran might suit you better while still maintaining great practicality.Additionally, evaluate how accessible the seating and entry points are, especially for elderly family members or those with limited mobility.
  • Consider Your Driving Needs - Think about the kind of driving you’ll do most often. Will the MPV be used for frequent motorway journeys, or are you mostly navigating urban streets? Smaller MPVs provide better manoeuvrability and fuel efficiency for city driving, while larger models are ideal for long-distance trips and carrying additional passengers or equipment.Fuel type is another consideration. Diesel engines may be well-suited for longer-distance driving, while hybrids or fully electric MPVs on the Motability scheme might be worth exploring for their environmental and cost-saving benefits.
  • Evaluate Comfort and Features - Your comfort matters as much as practicality. Some MPVs come equipped with driver aids like cruise control, rear parking sensors, and adjustable seating. Features like climate control and touchscreen infotainment systems can further enhance your driving experience. For families, look into additional storage compartments, cup holders, and rear-seat entertainment systems, which can make everyday journeys more enjoyable and stress-free.

Perfectly practical and fully family friendly; choose an MPV on the Motability scheme and you’re selecting an excellent all-rounder that’ll adapt to all your needs. Whether you need a large MPV with seven seats, such as the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi or you prefer a smaller MPV like the VW Touran, you are sure to find the right MPV for you on the Motability scheme.

Choosing an MPV doesn’t need to be an overwhelming decision. Speak with a Motability specialist at your preferred dealership, as they are experienced in recommending vehicles based on your specific needs. Remember that test driving different models can help you get a feel for what works best for you.
