Simple Things to do Before Heading Back to Work
After the Christmas break, it’s easy to jump straight back into work mode and forget about your car, however a quick New Year health check can help you avoid unexpected issues, reduce running costs and make sure you start the year safely.
In this blog, we’ll be giving you some simple checks that you can do at home before the first commute of the year.
Check your Tyres
Your tyres are the only point of contact between your car and the road, so they’re always a good place to start. Make sure your tyre pressures are correct, as cold weather can cause them to drop.
Incorrect pressures can affect handling, fuel efficiency and tyre wear. While you’re there, check the tread depth too. The legal minimum is 1.6mm, but in winter conditions, more tread means better grip.

Top Up Essential Fluids
A quick look under the bonnet can save you a lot of hassle later on. Check your engine oil level and top it up if needed. Low oil can lead to engine damage over time. Screen wash is especially important in winter, so make sure it’s topped up with a proper winter mix to stop it freezing.
It’s also worth checking coolant levels to help prevent your engine from overheating or freezing in colder temperatures.
Test your Battery
Car batteries work harder in winter and short festive trips don’t always give them enough time to recharge. If your engine sounds slow when starting, or warning lights appear on the dashboard, your battery could be struggling.
Many of our Swansway dealerships offer battery health checks, giving you peace of mind before you’re back on the daily commute.

Check Lights and Visibility
Dark mornings and evenings mean good visibility is essential. Walk around your car and check that all lights are working properly, including headlights, brake lights and indicators. Clean your headlights and windows too, as winter grime can quickly reduce visibility.
Don’t forget to check your wiper blades, if they’re smearing or squeaking, it might be time for a replacement.
Listen for Anything Unusual
When you first start driving again, pay attention to how your car feels. Unusual noises, vibrations or warning lights shouldn’t be ignored. Catching small issues early can help prevent bigger, more expensive problems later in the year.

Start the Year with Confidence
A New Year car health check doesn’t take long, but it can make a big difference to your safety and your car’s reliability. If you’d rather leave it to the experts, our Swansway service team are always happy to help, whether it’s a routine check or something more specific.
