Upcoming Changes to Motability Lease Extensions

If you’re on the Motability Scheme, there’s fresh news hot off the press about lease extensions. From Tuesday 16th December, the option to request a two year lease extension is being phased out. Instead, only short-term lease extensions, usually around six months, will be available moving forward.

Now, if you’re happy in your current car and were hoping to hold onto it for a couple more years, this might feel like a slight adjustment. But don’t worry, you can still extend your lease if you need to, it just won’t be for quite as long. These short-term extensions are there to cover things like waiting for your next car to arrive, or if you’ve got adaptations fitted that make life easier and you’re not ready to switch just yet.

So, why the change? Well to put it simply, it’s down to better availability of cars. Over the last few years, car dealerships have felt the pinch around supply issues, which meant longer extensions were helpful. But as this situation has continued to improve, Motability’s making things a little easier by keeping extensions short and sweet, helping customers move into their next cars sooner.

If you’ve already got a longer extension in place before 16th December, you’re fine, that’ll carry on as planned. It’s only new requests after that date that’ll switch to the short-term setup.
