The New VW Transporter: What's Changed?

You may have heard of the Volkswagen Transporter, but have you seen the update? Take a look now.

Volkswagen has unveiled the seventh-generation Transporter, marking a significant evolution in its iconic van lineup. This latest iteration introduces notable changes in design, powertrain options and technological advancements, setting new standards in the commercial vehicle sector. In this blog, we take a look at the new versus the old and what this could mean for the new Transporter.

Design and Platform Collaboration

A standout feature of the Transporter is its development in collaboration with Ford. This partnership has resulted in this vehicle sharing its platform with the Ford Transit Custom, a strategic move that combines Volkswagen's design ethos with Ford's engineering strengths. Despite this shared foundation, it maintains a distinct Volkswagen identity. The front fascia showcases a sharp aesthetic with LED headlights and tail lamps, reflecting Volkswagen's contemporary design language. The side profile features a pronounced linear curvature, known as the "Bulli line," paying homage to the original T1 model. At the rear, redesigned C-shaped LED taillights and horizontal lines emphasize the vehicle's width and modern appeal. The new Transporter has also retained Volkswagen’s van chassis, which provides the same driving comfort as its predecessors.

Enhanced Dimensions and Versatility

The van has grown in size compared to its predecessor, offering increased versatility for various applications. The standard model measures 5,050mm in length, with an extended wheelbase option stretching to 5,450mm. This expansion translates to a maximum cargo volume of up to 9.0 cubic meters in the long-wheelbase, high-roof configuration. The payload capacity has been enhanced to 1.33 tonnes and the towing capacity now reaches 2.8 tonnes, catering to a wide range of commercial needs, no matter the business requirements.

Diverse Powertrain Options

Volkswagen offers the Transporter with a variety of powertrain choices to meet diverse customer requirements. Traditional diesel engines are available in 110hp, 150hp and 170hp variants. For the first time, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option combines a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 230hp. Additionally, fully electric versions are offered, with power outputs ranging from 136hp to 286hp, all equipped with a 64kWh battery pack. These electric models provide an estimated range of over 186 miles, making them suitable for urban and regional operations.

Advanced Interior and Technology

Inside the cabin, it emphasizes driver comfort and technological integration. The dashboard features a 12-inch digital instrument cluster alongside a 13-inch infotainment touchscreen, both standard across all trims. These systems support wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensuring seamless connectivity for navigation and entertainment on longer journeys. Practical storage solutions are abundant in the Transporter and the use of high-quality materials enhances the overall ambiance. Notably, Volkswagen has opted for physical buttons on the steering wheel, favouring tactile feedback over touch-sensitive controls.

Production and Market Availability

Production of the Transporter is set to commence at Ford's manufacturing facility in Turkey, reflecting the collaborative effort between the two automotive giants. Pre-sales have already begun in select markets, with the base model priced from €36,780 (around £30,995). The official market launch is scheduled for March 2025, with the UK market expected to receive initial deliveries by late Q1 2025.
