While SUVs might have jumped in popularity in recent months, there are still plenty of buyers that prefer conventional hatchbacks.
Often known as family hatchbacks, these models aren’t quite as popular as they once were, but there is still a number that remain among the UK’s most popular cars. Let’s take a look at the best on sale today.
SEAT Leon
SEAT’s Leon remains this Spanish firm’s bestseller and is among one of the best family hatchbacks on sale. Offering a sharp design, especially when in the sportier FR trim levels, the Leon also comes with lots of equipment as standard.
Despite its relatively compact dimensions, the interior offers an impressive amount of room, particularly for rear passengers – making it a great choice for families with taller teenagers. The Leon also offers a good driving experience, while you can take things up another level by choosing CUPRA’s sportier Leon.
CUPRA Born
If you’re looking for a hatchback but want to make the switch to electric, you shouldn’t look much further than the CUPRA Born. This stylish EV aims to inject a bit of fun and sportiness into its class, and succeeds with a dynamic driving experience and interior that feels particularly sporty.
There are various versions of the Born on offer, with the largest 77kWh battery model able to travel a claimed 343 miles on a single charge – a fantastic figure for an EV of this size. The Born is also practical and will appeal to those who like technology with its array of features on offer.
Volkswagen Golf
The Volkswagen Golf has always been one of the best choices in the family hatchback category, and that remains the case today, even though this model is now in its eighth generation. Offering impressive comfort and refinement, it’s an ideal choice for those that clock up plenty of miles.
The Golf is also well-equipped as standard, while also offering a practical interior that’s ideal for a small family. The sheer choice of versions on offer adds to this VW’s appeal, from plug-in hybrids through to 320bhp hot hatch models.
Honda Civic
The Civic has been a key model for Honda over the years, with this model even celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2022. This latest version – in its impressive 11th generation – is the best yet too.
Switching to a hybrid powertrain, with the exception of the petrol Type R hot hatch, the Civic is efficient yet has plenty of performance should you need it. It’s also a great all-rounder behind the wheel, while the equipment levels are particularly generous.
PEUGEOT 308
PEUGEOT has been heading into premium territory for some time, and the firm’s latest 308 hatchback continues that journey. It’s one of the best-looking cars in its segment, particularly in a higher-spec trim, while the high-quality interior is laden with technology.
There’s also a 308 model for everybody, with PEUGEOT offering petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid versions able to travel up to a claimed 40 miles on a charge. Later this year the range will also expand to include an all-electric e-308.
Audi A3
If you want a particularly upmarket hatchback, you shouldn’t look much further than the Audi A3. It truly is a smaller-scale version of one of the brand’s far pricier models, offering superb levels of comfort and refinement, but also being good fun to drive when the road and conditions allow.
The A3’s interior is especially smart, with a large touchscreen and digital dial display giving it a modern feel. Audi also continues to offer a great choice of versions, including petrol, diesel and class-leading plug-in hybrids that are ideal for fleet users.
