The suspension set-up of the Jetta is perfect for British roads, making it an incredibly comfortable ride. Whether tackling speed humps in town or taking on those annoying expansion joints on motorway bridges, the Jetta absorbs them all, leaving the car occupants unruffled.
It’s also spacious, marketed as a small saloon car with lots of room in the cabin (especially the back seats) and a huge boot for all your luggage. Volkswagen wisely restricted the engine range of the Jetta to just two versions of the 2.0-litre TDI diesel (108 and 148bhp) and two 1.4 TSI petrol units (123 and 148bhp), which help make this model super economic. All models of the Volkswagen Jetta also come with VW’s latest BlueMotion Technology modifications as standard, including Stop/Start and battery regeneration systems.
Aside from all this, the Volkswagen Jetta is a unique statement - you won’t be part of the crowd. Volkswagen only sold around 2,000 Jettas in the UK last year, so they’re still relatively rare. So while everyone else is buying Golfs or Passats, you’ll be expressing that individuality with your Jetta.
The VW Jetta has been around for decades, selling more than 17 million worldwide, and has historically been something of a premium offering in the compact-car class.
Featuring all-new, sleeker styling, the redesigned 2006 VW Jetta is significantly larger on the outside than its predecessor and has more passenger and cargo room inside. A multi-link design was adopted for the rear suspension, in place of the previous torsion beam, and a diesel engine was still available in addition to a standard gas engine.
With the Jetta's 2011 redesign, Volkswagen dropped the car's starting price, then a hybrid model with a turbocharged gas engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission debuted for 2013 and lasted a handful of model years.
Larger than its predecessor and riding on a longer wheelbase, the redesigned 2019 Jetta has a slightly lower starting price than the outgoing model. Power comes from a 147-horsepower, turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine.
Though a six-speed manual transmission is standard, most trim levels have an eight-speed automatic. A touchscreen multimedia system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity is standard. Available active safety features include automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keep assist.
