CUPRA Overview

CUPRA, pronounced KOO-pruh, has a rich history that began in 1985 as SEAT Sport. Originally focused on rally championship endeavours, CUPRA quickly expanded into touring car racing and creating high-performance versions of SEAT road cars like the Leon CUPRA and Ibiza CUPRA.

In 2018, CUPRA became its own standalone brand, signalling a significant change for both itself and SEAT. The first vehicle to bear the CUPRA emblem was the CUPRA Ateca, which had unique styling and badging while still being based on a SEAT model. Later, the Formentor and Born joined the lineup as completely new vehicles.

Since its inception, CUPRA has been dedicated to performance and racing. As part of the Volkswagen Group, it benefits from the engineering quality reputation of Volkswagen. CUPRA is actively involved in electric motorsport championships, showcasing its commitment to innovation and sustainability in high-performance vehicles. The road-going lineup is also becoming more eco-friendly, with plug-in hybrid versions of the Leon, Leon Estate, and Formentor, as well as the all-electric Born.

In September 2023, Volkswagen Group made the announcement that the CUPRA name would replace SEAT, with the SEAT moniker being repurposed.

Additionally, the CUPRA Born received the esteemed title of 'Best Small Company Car' at the same event, a significant accomplishment for CUPRA's electric vehicle range.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen Group has also earned recognition for its electrification strategy. In 2022, it was named OEM of the Year at the EVIE (Electric Vehicle Innovation and Excellence) Awards, solidifying its commitment to innovative and excellent electric vehicle solutions.
