What is an MOT?

An MOT test is an annual inspection that is required by law on all vehicles in the UK that are older than 3 years. The test follows strict criteria that is set out by the DVSA to determine whether your car is fit for purpose and roadworthy.

During the MOT test, a technician will assess your vehicle, will conduct a comprehensive inspection to ensure the vehicle is in roadworthy condition. However, it is not the same as having your vehicle serviced and the MOT test does not check the general mechanical condition of the vehicle.

If the vehicle passes, the tester will provide you with a pass certificate. They will also separately list and inform you of any 'advisory' or 'minor' items that will require attention in the near future so you can keep an eye on them. If the vehicle fails, you may be entitled to a free re-test.

What will we check during your MOT?

  • Headlights and Indicators - Make sure all of your car lights work properly. This includes headlights, sidelights, rear lights, hazard lights and indicators.
  • Wheels and tyres - Check that wheels and tyres aren’t damaged and above the minimum legal tyre tread depth, 1.6mm.
  • Battery - The battery must be secure and not show any signs of leaking electrolytes. Damaged batteries are an automatic MOT failure.
  • Seats and Seatbelts - We will test the movement of the seat and inspect the seatbelt's full length for damage.
  • Brakes, steering and suspension - Your tester will check your brakes will stop, your steering is working correctly and your suspension is flattening out those lumps and bumps.
  • Windscreen - Look out for stone chips and cracks on the screen. Any damage larger than 40mm will result in an immediate fail.
  • Wipers - Check your wipers to ensure they don’t have any tears or holes in the wiper rubber. This can cause an MOT fail.
  • Engine fluid and fuel - Ensure that your vehicle is filled with enough fuel and engine oil.
