The SUV market has grown hugely in recent years, and whether you’re a serial SUV owner or looking for something different to a hatchback or estate car, these models continue to make a lot of sense.

Offering sharp styling, an elevated driving position and practical interior, these models certainly make a lot of sense and are fantastic family cars. But with so much choice, it can be hard to settle on the right model for you. But if you want something eye-catching yet comfortable and spacious, a Peugeot SUV can make a great choice.

With the choice of the compact 2008, mid-size 3008 and large 5008, which model is best for you?

Kicking off Peugeot’s SUV range is the 2008 – the brand’s most compact model in this respect, but one that’s still able to stand out. Boasting the firm’s latest bold design, the 2008 is treated to elements like ‘claw’ LED lights (on higher-spec cars), as well as 3D-effect LED rear lights. Certain examples also get a cool Black Diamond roof, which contrasts neatly to the colour of the rest of the car. It’s a properly smart-looking SUV, and really stands out in this well-populated class.

The interior of the latest Peugeot 2008 is also a big step up from its predecessor, both in terms of quality and technology. It certainly feels premium, and with a large touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto included on all versions, it feels very modern too. From Allure Premium trim upwards, the 2008 also comes with Peugeot’s superb 3D i-Cockpit digital instrument cluster, adding a further futuristic element to the interior.

Though the 2008 might be a compact package, it still offers plenty of room, which could make it an excellent small family SUV. With the seats upright, the boot measures 434 litres, which is still more than plenty of family hatchbacks, while folding them increases the space on offer to 1,467 litres.

With a wide range of petrol and diesel options to choose from, the 2008 will fit into the lives of many, while you can also choose it as an EV in the form of the e-2008. Using a 134bhp electric motor and 50kWh battery, it’s capable of up to 214 miles from a single charge, while 100kW rapid charging capability means its battery can be topped up to 80 per cent in just 30 minutes.

The fact it’s won multiple awards is a sign of just how excellent the Peugeot 3008 is. So if you find the 2008 just a bit too small for your needs, it’s worth stepping up to this slightly larger SUV instead.

The latest generation of 3008 has stood out pretty much ever since it launched in 2016, but Peugeot has recently updated it – giving it an even more stylish look. Changes include a new frameless grille, full advanced LED lighting and sequential indicators, all helping the 3008 to look further upmarket. A ‘Black Pack’ is also available on top-spec GT and GT Premium models, bringing a darkened grille, satin black badging and roof rails and large 19-inch black alloy wheels.

The upmarket theme continues inside, where you’re met by Peugeot’s excellent ‘i-Cockpit’ digital dial display, which is fitted to all new 3008s. All versions get a touchscreen, and with the exception of the Active Premium, it’s a widescreen 10-inch system that features. With a range of high-end materials used throughout, and various different textures, the 3008 offers a bold and refreshingly different interior to many.

The 3008 is also available with a whole range of technology, not least ‘night vision’, which uses infra-red cameras that can pick up heat, meaning it could spot any pedestrians, cyclists or animals in the dark far quicker than your own eyes could. A 10-speaker Focal sound system will appeal to the music lovers, while massaging seats could be ideal for those suffering from back trouble, or simply wanting maximum comfort.

Peugeot offers a great range of powertrains in the 3008, including efficient petrol and diesel options, as well as a pair of plug-in hybrids. These are able to travel for up to 40 miles purely on electricity, and could enable some seriously low running costs if you charge it regularly. One of the hybrid versions is also all-wheel-drive, and develops a plentiful 296bhp – allowing for a 0-60mph time of under six seconds.

PEUGEOT 5008

5008 SUV

If you want to combine space and style, things don’t get much better than the Peugeot 5008. It’s the brand’s largest SUV and is a superb choice for families, with all versions coming with seven seats. What’s more, if you need a huge load carrying ability, with both sets of rear seats folded, the 5008 offers more than 2,000 litres of boot space, along with a maximum interior load length of 3.2 metres – meaning you could even fit surfboards inside without having to load them on the roof.

Though no electric or hybrid 5008 is available, the choice of petrol and diesel engines on offer should suit most, along with manual and automatic gearbox options. If you want maximum efficiency, though, you should take a look at the 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel engine, which is able to return more than 60mpg, making it a particularly frugal choice, considering the size of this SUV.

A vast range of technology is also available, and it’s worth finding an example with the ‘Safety Plus Pack’ fitted, which brings lane keep assist, high beam assist, autonomous emergency braking and a driver attention alert. Other standard equipment is very generous too, including dual-zone climate control, a reversing camera, LED headlights and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

As you climb the trim level ladder, features such as adaptive cruise control, Alcantara and leather seats and self-parking functionality come into play, giving the 5008 a particularly high-end feel.
