How to get bonfire debris off your car without damaging the paint
With Bonfire Night fast approaching, we’re urging motorists across the region to take a few simple precautions to protect their cars from firework debris, ash and accidental damage.
Drawing on years of experience in bodywork repair and vehicle maintenance, these tips are to help drivers avoid costly repairs and keep their vehicles safe over the festive night.
Rising Risk from Firework Debris
As skies light up on Bonfire Night, stray sparks and falling ash can pose a hidden danger to parked cars. Even cool ash, when wetted by rain or moisture, can trigger chemical reactions that damage paintwork and finishes. Hot sparks or embers can leave visible burn marks or even cause surface scorching. Windows or sunroofs left open increase the risk of sparks getting inside, potentially triggering fires.
Bonfire night is the busiest night of the year for the UK fire services.
David Smyth, Director at Swansway Motor Group, said:
“Bonfire Night should be about excitement and memories, not stressing about your car. Forward thinking goes a long way, park smartly, cover your vehicles where you can and clean off any ash quickly. Your vehicle will be less likely to need expensive repairs after the bonfire night.”
To minimise risk, drivers can follow this checklist before and after Bonfire Night:
Before the event:
Choose your parking spot wisely- Use designated showground parking or driveways well away from firework events.
Use a car cover- A protective cover provides an extra barrier against falling embers and ash.
Park indoors if possible- Garages or covered parking are ideal; if not available, park well away from flammable materials.
Don’t leave fireworks in your car overnight- Moisture can compromise the fireworks, risking leakage or ignition inside the vehicle.
After the event:
Rinse off ash immediately- Use a hose to remove residues before they can react with moisture.
Use car shampoo- Not household detergents, to safely lift dirt and residues from paint.
Dry gently with microfiber cloths- Prevent streaks and avoid scratching.
Apply wax or sealant- This adds a protective barrier for your paintwork and helps with future cleaning.
