Volkswagen T-Roc: What Do We Know Currently?

The T-Roc is already one of the most popular models in the Volkswagen range. With more than two million units having already been sold so far globally since its debut in 2017, this makes it VW’s most successful SUV after the Tiguan. It also has an impressive list of awards under its belt.

The second-generation T-Roc launched in the UK with Life, Style and R-Line trim levels. The latest model builds on the success of its predecessor with a distinctive design, high-quality interior and even more space for luggage and passengers. Assist systems and technologies from higher vehicle classes are included and, in the future, it will feature a completely new full hybrid powertrain.

The new T-Roc steps up its design game with a more assertive stance and sharper lines. Compared to its predecessor, the latest T-Roc feels more modern and confident:

  • Redesigned Front Fascia with a wider grille and sleek LED headlights
  • Sportier Silhouette with dynamic creases and muscular wheel arches
  • Fresh Colour and Wheel Options to personalise your T-Roc to your taste

Whether you’re navigating city streets or heading out on weekend adventures, this SUV’s exterior strikes the perfect balance between contemporary and dynamic.

Volkswagen T-Roc: What Don’t We Currently Know?

Volkswagen has confirmed that full-hybrid powertrains will join the lineup, offering improved efficiency and electrified driving capability. However, precise power outputs, fuel economy estimates, and performance figures for these hybrid variants haven’t been officially published yet.

Detailed Trim-by-Trim Kit Lists

Volkswagen has outlined broad equipment levels, like Life, Style and R-Line. However, full, detailed comparisons of exactly what features are included at each level across markets are still unclear. Buyers are still waiting for precise breakdowns of things like standard driver-assist suites, infotainment options, upholstery materials, and convenience tech in each trim.

What’s the New T-Roc Like?

A Bigger & Spacious SUV

The new T-Roc has grown noticeably compared with the outgoing model, it’s about 120 mm longer with a longer wheelbase and more interior room. That extra size isn’t just for show, where rear passengers get noticeably more legroom, and boot capacity grows to around 475 litres, making it much more practical for families and weekend gear. This means it feels roomier and more comfortable inside than before, rival-level space in a compact SUV you’d expect from something closer to a Tiguan.

A newly developed dashboard upholstery combines with background lighting to create a lounge-like atmosphere in the new T-Roc’s interior, which impresses with its premium quality and soft-touch surfaces. It also includes innovative door handles, a large 12.9-inch infotainment screen as standard and an optional windscreen head-up display.

The new T-Roc adopts numerous features from the larger Tiguan and Tayron models, such as the latest driving experience control which can, among other features, select driving profiles and control infotainment volume. Other cabin highlights include wireless phone charging, the crystal-clear 10-inch Digital Cockpit Pro (from Style trim upwards) and massage seats (Style trim only). More space is also available, both in the cabin for passengers and in the 475-litre boot for luggage - 30 litres more than the outgoing T-Roc.

Expressive Exterior

While the new T-Roc retains the model’s quintessential DNA, with its coupe-like rear and ‘hockey stick’ C pillar, the newcomer’s dynamic design is 12.2 cm longer and nine millimetres taller and wider than the previous version. Alloy wheels up to 20 inches, a first for the T-Roc and bold colours such as the new Canary yellow, Flamed red and Celestial blue complete the sporty and confident design.

Lighting is also updated, with light-projecting mirror housings and new LED headlights featured as standard. IQ.Light LED matrix headlights are optional and are connected to the white illuminated Volkswagen logo by a narrow light strip. The new T-Roc’s rear also features a continuous LED crossbar with a red illuminated Volkswagen logo.

New Powertrain and High-end Features

Two 1.5 eTSI mild hybrid turbocharged petrol engines are available at launch, with outputs of 116 PS and 150 PS, and they will be followed by two all-new full-hybrid drive systems. All variants are front-wheel drive and have an automatic seven-speed-direct-shift gearbox. The new T-Roc is the third SUV to be built on Volkswagen’s successful MQB evo platform, after the Tiguan and Tayron, and so it benefits from hardware and software already seen in these higher-class models.

They include optional features such as Travel Assist, which supports automatic lane changes and reacts to variations in speed limit, and Park Assist Pro - another first for the T-Roc. It uses the memory function for automatic parking over distances of up to 50 metres and allows a smartphone to be used to drive the vehicle into and out of parking spaces. The exit warning system is also available as an option, to warn occupants before the doors are opened that cars of bicycles are approaching from behind.

How Does it Feel to Drive the New T-Roc?

Driving the new Volkswagen T-Roc second-generation feels composed, confident, and refined, exactly what you’d expect from a compact SUV designed to suit both city streets and longer journeys. Thanks to its mild-hybrid powertrain and smooth 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox, acceleration feels seamless in everyday traffic, and the ride quality leans towards comfort without feeling floaty. On motorways, the T-Roc stays steady and reassuring, with minimal influence from crosswinds, making cruising a relaxed experience. Steering is light and responsive around town, and while the suspension can feel a touch firm over larger bumps, most drivers will appreciate the balanced blend of comfort to sportier settings, so it adapts to your style on the fly, whether you’re navigating roundabouts or covering miles on the open road.

Our Verdict on the New T-Roc

The second-generation Volkswagen T-Roc is shaping up to be a meaningful evolution rather than a radical reinvention. While VW appears to be playing it safe with the overall design, the expected improvements in interior quality, digital technology, and efficiently directly address the key criticisms of the outgoing model. If Volkswagen delivers on its promises, particularly in terms of infotainment usability and powertrain refinement. The new T-Roc could strengthen its position as one of the most well-rounded compact SUVs in its class.

For buyers, the appeal of the next-gen T-Roc will likely come down to balance. It aims to retain the practicality, driving comfort, and brand appeal that made the original successful, while modernising just enough to stay competitive in an increasingly crowded segment. Assuming pricing remains sensible, the second-generation T-Roc looks set to continue as a safe yet compelling choice for those seeking a stylish, everyday compact SUV with a premium edge.
