History of BYD’s Blade Battery

Origins & Purpose

The Blade Battery was developed by BYD, a Chinese company that started as a battery maker in the 1990s before becoming one of the world’s largest EV manufacturers. The technology was born out of BYD’s long-standing focus on battery safety and innovation - aiming to solve one of the biggest barriers to electric vehicles adoption - battery safety and longevity.

With the battery’s official launch in March 2020 after several years of research and development, its first commercial application was in the BYD Han - a flagship electric sedan that debuted later that year. This marked the first time the battery technology was used in a production EV. What made the Blade Battery different was its long, flat cell design arranged in a blade-like array. This structure increases space usage inside the battery pack and contributes to better cooling and safety performance, compared with earlier LFP (lithium iron phosphate).

BYD Blade Battery Safety Achievements

One of the defining moments in Blade Battery history was its performance in nail tests - a harsh test used to simulate short circuits and extreme stress. Unlike many traditional lithium batteries that can overheat or catch fire, the Blade Battery showed no flames or smoke and stayed well below dangerous temperatures. This helped establish its reputation for industry-leading safety.

Expansion Beyond Cars

After providing itself in passenger EVs, BYD expanded the use of Blade Batteries into other areas - including energy storage systems like the BYD MC Cube, and even bus platforms showcased in international transportation expos. These moves show the technology’s versatility beyond just cars.

Evolution & Future Generations

BYD continues to refine and upgrade the Blade Battery. A second-generation version has been under development, promising higher energy density and improved performance - potentially bringing LFP batteries closer to rival chemistries in efficiency and range.

Global Impact

While Blade Battery uptake outside China has been gradual, BYD’s vertical integration - owning much of the battery production process through its subsidiary FinDreams Battery - has positioned it as a major global battery player. Its capacity has scaled rapidly since initial production, supporting both its own vehicles and broader supply chain ambitions.

A Big Boost for EV Owners

Battery technology remains one of the biggest concerns for prospective electric vehicle buyers. By offering an extended warranty period, BYD directly addresses this issue, giving owners peace of mind that their vehicle’s most critical component is protected for the long haul.

An eight year or 250,000km warranty places BYD among the most competitive manufacturers in the global EV market. It also signals the company’s confidence in the engineering and performance of the Blade Battery, even under demanding real-world driving conditions.

What Makes the BYD Blade Battery Different?

Introduced as a safer and more durable alternative to conventional lithium-ion batteries, the Blade Battery has several key advantages:

  • Enhanced Safety - With a strong resistance to overheating and thermal runaway.
  • Longer Lifespan - Maintaining stable performance over many charge cycles.
  • Improved Packaging Efficiency - Allowing for better use of space within the vehicle.
  • Reduced Reliance on Rare Materials - Supporting sustainability goals.

Blade Battery Backed by Real-World Use

Extending the warranty to 250,000km reflects BYD’s confidence in how the Blade Battery performs beyond laboratory conditions. Whether used for daily commuting, long-distance travel, or commercial applications such as ride-hailing and fleet services, the battery is designed to deliver consistent performance over many years. This move is particularly attractive for high-mileage drivers and fleet operators, who prioritise long-term cost efficiency and minimal downtime.

Strengthening BYD’s EV Stance

As BYD continues to expand its presence in international markets, policies like extended battery warranties play a key role in building trust with new customers. The announcement aligns with the company’s broader strategy to position itself as a leader in EV innovation, safety, and value. With governments worldwide accelerating the transition to electric mobility, consumer-friendly measures such as longer warranties may prove decisive in influencing purchasing decisions.
