A Legacy Born in 1976

When the original Golf GTI debuted in 1976, it quietly rewrote the rules. What begun as a tiny project inside Volkswagen became a global phenomenon, blending everyday practicality with thrilling performance. The formula was simple but revolutionary, lightweight design, a punchy engine, sharp handling and an affordable price. The GTI didn’t just create a segment, it defined it.

Over five decades, the GTI has evolved through generations, embracing turbocharging, advanced chassis technology, and digital interiors, while never losing the playful spirit that made it famous.

Expect exclusive design details that set the Edition 50 apart, from unique badging and wheels to subtle nods to GTI heritage inside the cabin. Performance enhancements underline Volkswagen’s intent, this car isn’t just about looking back, it’s about pushing the GTI formula forward.

Design that Honours the Past, Embraces the Future

Visually, the Edition 50 strikes a careful balance. Classic GTI cues, such as red accents and a purposeful stance are combined with modern styling elements that reflects the Golf’s latest generation. Inside, the driver-focused cockpit blends heritage-inspired details with contemporary technology, reminding you that this is still a GTI at heart, just evolved for a new era.

Performance with a Nod to Enthusiasts

While the GTI has always been practical, its soul lies in how it drives. The Edition 50 builds on that reputation with enhanced performance tuning, improved chassis dynamics, and a setup aimed squarely at driving enthusiasts. Whether on a twisty back road or a track day, the Edition 50 is expected to deliver a more focused and engaging experience than the standard GTI. Importantly, Volkswagen remains committed to keeping the GTI approachable. This isn’t a stripped-out, uncomfortable special - it’s a car that still works as a daily driver, just one that feels extra special when the road opens up.

A Bridge Between Past & Future

The Golf GTI Edition 50 arrives at a pivotal moment for Volkswagen. As the automotive world shifts towards electrification, this anniversary model serves as a tribute to the internal-combustion hot hatch era while embracing modern efficiency, connectivity, and driver-assistance technologies. In many ways, the Edition 50 is a celebration, not just a car, but of a philosophy it captures driving enjoyment that doesn’t need to be complicated or exclusive.

More than an Anniversary Model

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 is more than a commemorative badge. It’s a statement of intent, proof that even after 50 years, the GTI formula still matters. By blending heritage design, engaging performance, and everyday usability, Volkswagen reminds us why the GTI became an icon in the first place. For long-time fans and new enthusiasts alike, the Edition 50 stands as a fitting tribute to one of the most influential performance cars ever made, and it is a reminder that the spirit of the GTI is very much alive.

Built to Turn Heads

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 is the fastest and most powerful production Golf GTI built to date. Possessing a 2.0 TSI engine, paired with a seven-speed automatic direct-shift gearbox that is tuned to produce an astounding 325 PS and 420 Nm of torque, enough to accelerate to 62 mph in just 5.3 seconds. This new Golf can also reach a top speed of 168 mph, where permitted. There are many areas of the suspension and chassis that have been upgraded from previous Golf GTI variants, making sure the additional power and speed translates into superior and dynamic handling, while Volkswagen’s adaptive chassis control system, a standard feature on the GTI Edition 50, retains comfort for complete usability.

“The Golf GTI Edition 50 is a statement with which Volkswagen expresses the pure GTI idea, the combination of superior drive power and highly precise chassis with front-wheel drive, more effectively than ever before,” said Benny Leuchter after his record-breaking drive.

The car was equipped with the optional Performance Package, which Benny Leuchter described as the “decisive factor” in his record attempt, which was all the more remarkable given the wet track conditions and bad weather that meant he was limited to just a single lap of the Nordschleife.
