A history of the Audi A4 Avant
In 1994, production started for the game changing Audi A4. At the time, the Audi brand had developed a reputation for being outdated. The new Audi A4 was intended to change that - and it worked. Over the next several years, sales for the first generation saloon were extraordinarily successful. Audi had successfully rebranded and improved their reputation, making them a competitor with similar luxury brands once again.
The Avant was announced at the end of 1995 as the estate version of the A4. Like the saloon model, the Avant was at once popular with consumers and is still a top choice today. Since its release in 1996, there have been five generations of the Audi A4, all offering the 4-door saloon body, or the 5-door Avant style. Some generations also offer the Cabriolet body style.
Buying a used Audi A4 Avant
As a luxury car brand, buying a new Audi is unaffordable for many. This makes buying a used car a popular choice. An Audi A4 Avant for sale that’s even just a few years old brings down the price tag considerably.
When looking at a used Audi A4 Avant, you’ll want to look for a vehicle that has been well-maintained and cared for by its previous owner.
Second hand Audi A4 Avant options
1st generation (1994 to 2001)
The first generation of the Audi A4 Avant was known as the B5, thanks to being built on the Volkswagen Group B5 platform. This generation offers both gasoline and diesel engines, with four- and six-cylinder options. Buyers also have a choice between front and all-wheel drive.
In 1999, the B5 got a facelift. The biggest change at this time was the addition of the 2.8-litre 30-valve V6 engine, as well as major cosmetic changes to the styling of the vehicle, including new headlights and rear lights, bumpers, handles, and console.
2nd generation (2000 to 2006)
The B6 Audi A4 has more powerful engine options, with the 4.2-liter V8 engine on the RS4 Avant. 1.6-litre and 1.8-litre engines are also available. For diesel engines, 1.9-litre to 2.5 litre TDI engines are available. Despite being over 15 years old, B6 Audi A4 Avants come with both standard and audio system options, as well as navigation and Bluetooth.
3rd generation (2004 to 2009)
The third generation B7 Audi A4 again offers a wide range of engine options, from 1.6-litre and 100 hp up to the 4.2-litre V8 engine. Front and all-wheel drive, and manual and automatic transmissions are available on all years of the Avant in this generation. The exterior of the vehicle was also upgraded to include the single frame grille that was already being included on other Audi models.
4th generation (2008 to 2016)
The B8 Audi A4 came with more technology options. Once again, it was built on a new platform. This generation was upgraded to include the option of Audi’s new signature quattro four-wheel drive. Most Audi A4 Avants in this generation have a manual transmission, but there are some out there with an automatic transmission as well. The LED headlights give the Avant a sporty, modern look, and the advanced infotainment units are a desirable feature for consumers looking to buy a used A4 Avant.
5th generation (2016 to present)
The current generation B9 Audi A4 Avant is larger than its predecessors, but also lighter. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual, 7-speed S-tronic, and 8-speed Tiptronic. There are seven engine options in gasoline and diesel so you’re sure to get the horsepower you want.
