Extraordinary Power

With distinctive 'S' styling and the familiar silhouette of the A5, the Audi S5 Sportback is a car that looks, and will leave you in no doubt that it is a member of the high-performance Audi 'S' range.

Audi’s 5-badged cars have been a serious success story. Providing practicality and style in equal measure, they’re almost a no-brainer alternative to the typical executive saloon buyers who perhaps don’t quite need all the space those models deliver. The S5 turns the performance up a little while retaining an economical edge courtesy of the diesel engine, while the Sportback version adds the extra practicality of a hatchback compared with the coupe version.

Interior

Few rivals can hold a candle to Audi interiors, and that’s no different in any of the A5 variants. Everywhere you look the quality is immediately apparent, and everything you touch just has that expensive, solid feel the German marque has become known for.

In the S5 Sportback, all of those positive points are only amplified, through the use of standard nappa leather upholstery, contrast stitching and sports seats that give you a soft but secure hug in the corners. It honestly feels like a price point above where it is.

With the hatchback, the Sportback is decently more spacious in the rear than the Coupe, so might be worth considering if you’re going to be regularly carrying adults in the back seats. The extra set of doors will make life much less of a hassle in this situation, too.

Exterior

Audi has given the S5 a much more purposeful and aggressive stance with this latest generation. While it still retains some of the subdued and subtle styling of its predecessors, there are definitely hints of the performance underneath.

For example, the front air intakes in the lower front bumper have sharp creases, while the aggressively drooping bonnet makes it look ready to pounce. Despite its differing boot access options, the Sportback gets the same sporty spoiler as seen on the coupe, while the quad-exit exhaust tips further point to the fact this is a performance car.

Technology

Given the fact that this is a high-end premium car, it’s no surprise to learn that it’s packed full of technology that will appeal to all types of buyers, whether you’re performance-focused, safety-conscious, or want to keep running costs low.

The technology on offer includes LED headlight technology that improves night vision for safety, LED rear lights, satellite navigation, an advanced parking aid with a reversing camera for peace of mind when parking up, an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system for audiophiles, 360-degree cameras and more.

Performance

While many were surprised to see Audi’s S performance models switch to diesel power, it’s been a resounding success as buyers have found the impressive acceleration and good economy these engines provide to be very appealing.

Along with the turbocharged 3.0-litre diesel V6 engine, the S5 also gets a small electric that makes it a mild hybrid set-up. This helps to improve fuel economy by running on electric-only power when coasting or slowing to a stop, as well as providing a little assistance to the engine under acceleration.

The system makes 342bhp and 700Nm, with all-wheel drive also contributing to a 0-60mph time of just 4.8 seconds.
