What’s new?

In the next few years, you can expect Audi to drop the A4 nameplate as we know it, and the model will instead move to combine with the A5 – the German firm will adopt the policy of electric models being even numbers, and regular engines and hybrids being odd numbers.

The A4 has received regular updates, however, with the most recent giving this Audi a front-end design with a sportier grille design and upgraded LED lighting. There’s also a new touchscreen infotainment used inside.

What’s under the bonnet?

The A4 caters to those who aren’t quite ready for an electrified model, with a line-up of conventional petrol and diesel engines offered here. All use an S tronic automatic gearbox too.

Let’s start with the diesel models, which are called the 35 TDI and 40 TDI. Each uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit that produces 161bhp and 201bhp respectively. Both are good in terms of performance and offer strong efficiency, Audi claims up to 60mpg from the smaller unit.

If you’d prefer a petrol, there is the 35 TFSI and the 40 TFSI – again both 2.0-litre engines – which produce 148bhp and 201bhp respectively, and offer surprising efficiency as well.

What’s it like to drive?

The A4 is a car that makes the most sense when driven in a leisurely style. The refinement is exceptional, with minimal wind and road noise making its way into the cabin. The diesel engines can be a touch gruff, but the petrols are smooth and quiet. Stick to smaller alloy wheels and the ride comfort on offer top-notch as well. An adaptive suspension setup is also offered if you want to switch between different driving modes.

Like previous A4s, this Audi isn’t designed to be the sportiest vehicle on the road, though you can choose S4 and RS4 versions if you want something a bit more engaging.

How does it look?

Audi hasn’t changed the A4’s design all that dramatically over the years, but this latest update has given this saloon a sportier look without compromising on its standard classy design.

It looks closer in line with the latest A6 and A8 models, with the smart new LED lights giving it a more noticeable signature. As with other Audis, it’s the S line and Black Edition that offers the most street cred with their more aggressive bodykits and larger alloy wheels.

What’s it like inside?

One area you will really struggle to knock is the A4’s interior. It’s Audi at its very finest, with a stunning high-quality look and feel. There’s nothing in here that hints at corners being cut, and it certainly seems far more plush than a Mercedes C-Class, which can feel a bit flimsy.

The 10.1-inch touchscreen is slick to operate and accompanied by Audi’s brilliant 12.3-inch digital cockpit that remains one of the finest fitted to any car. While the A4 might be one of Audi’s more compact saloons, the space on offer is impressive. There’s plenty of rear-seat room, while the boot is a good size as well. As with any saloon, the opening isn’t the handiest, but you can of course choose the more practical A4 Avant instead.

What’s the spec like?

All A4 models come with a generous level of equipment, with even the entry-level Sport version featuring full LED lighting. Heated front seats, three-zone climate control and a rear-view camera.

S line models appeal with their sportier look, courtesy of 19-inch alloy wheels, S line bumpers and lowered sports suspension. You also get privacy glass, dinamica-trimmed sports seats and stainless steel pedals.

At the top of the line-up, the Black Edition brings full black styling kit, along with a flat-bottomed steering wheel and metallic paint as standard.

Verdict

Audi’s A4 might not be quite as new as its key BMW and Mercedes rivals, but this model feels no less premium.

The interior quality is exceptional, and when combined with a comfortable and refined drive and roomy interior, it’s more than able to hold its own.
