  • How do the CAZ fines work?

Where is Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone in operation?

The Clean Air Zone is the area that lies within the Middleway Ring Road (A4540) in Birmingham city. The main aim of the Clean Air Zone is to discourage drivers of high emission vehicles from entering the city centre. This is to reduce air pollution, which is harmful to both the environment and public health. The Clean Air Zone is operational 24 hours a day, every day, and all vehicles that are not compliant with the emission standards must pay to drive in the Clean Air Zone.

The Clean Air Zone has boundary signs to show drivers where the zone starts and ends. These signs help drivers to avoid driving in the Clean Air Zone and thus reduce the air pollution levels. If you need to drive to the city centre, it's best to consider options such as walking, cycling, or using public transport.

How do the CAZ fines work?

To enforce the Clean Air Zone, there are cameras located within the zone to identify vehicles that require payment. If your vehicle is not compliant with the emission standards, you must pay a daily charge. There are exemptions available, including for residents or workers within the Clean Air Zone. Additionally, medical permits are available, and vouchers can be collected to cover the Clean Air Zone charge for medical appointments. Financial assistance is also available for eligible people who work inside the zone to scrap their non-compliant vehicle.

If you do not pay the Clean Air Zone fee, you might be subject to a penalty charge of £120. However, this can be reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days. In case of any queries or questions, the Clean Air Zone support team is available to help. You can contact the support team, Monday through Friday, between 8 am to 7 pm, and Saturday 8 am to 2 pm. The support team is closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

The Clean Air Zone is essential in reducing air pollution in Birmingham. By discouraging drivers of non-compliant vehicles and encouraging alternatives such as walking, cycling, or using public transport, we can improve the air quality in the city centre. If you need to drive to the city centre, ensure your vehicle meets the emission standards to avoid paying daily charges.
