Is it worth getting your tyres checked?

We would always recommend being on the safe side where tyres are concerned, if you don't you're risking invalidating your car insurance policy, getting fined and penalty points and endangering around when driving on damaged or worn tyres.

What is the legal minimum tread depth for van tyres?

The legal minimum tread depth for vans is a minimum of 1.6mm. This 1.6mm should be in a continuous band throughout the central three-quarters of the tread width, throughout the whole of the circumference.

How do you know if your van tyres are legal?

As long as you're tyres do not have any of the following and are within the legal minimum tread depth they should be fine:

  • Any cut in excess of 25mm or 10% of the section width of the tyre , whichever is greater, measured in any direction on the outside of the tyre and deep enough to reach the ply or cord would deem the tyre illegal.
  • If there is any cut in the tyre no matter how small which exposes cords, then the tyre is illegal.

It's also worth noting that all tyres marked "Temporary Use Only" are restricted to 50mph so if you go over this, we know we sound repetitive now, but, it's illegal.
