What to do if your car is keyed

Someone keyed your car, here’s what to do

‘Keying’ is the deliberate damage of your car’s paintwork using a sharp object, it doesn’t always have to be a key. If you’ve been unfortunate enough to have it happen to you, we can help, read on for your options.

Call your local police on 101, the non-emergency number, keying is an act of vandalism so even if they can’t take immediate action, it’s good to have the incident on record. They will also give you a crime reference number that you’ll need if you wish to make an insurance claim.

Check whether your car insurance policy covers damage from vandalism. Some include this as standard, but not all do.

If you don’t want to claim on your insurance policy you can still have the repair work carried out, but you’ll need to pay for it. Depending on the extent of the damage this can work out cheaper than the excess on your policy.

How to repair a car after keying

The type of repair we’d recommend depends on how deep the scratches are. If the scratches are very light and only superficial we will be able to get them out with some polishing. If they are a bit deeper into the metalwork we will have to repaint and possibly fill. A good way of judging whether your car has superficial scratches or not is to run your thumbnail lightly against the scratch, if you can feel it then it will need more than just polishing.

It’s important to get scratches fixed, even if you’re not bothered about the aesthetics of your car, as they can expose your metalwork to rust and corrosion.
