New Audi R8 Performance RWD hits the road

Audi has updated its rear-wheel-drive R8, bringing more performance and power than before.

Called the R8 Performance RWD - as opposed to R8 V10 RWD as it was known previously - gains a number of mechanical upgrades, though the car’s mid-engined layout remains the same as before.

The same 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 engine provides the beating heart to the R8, but it now kicks out 562bhp - 30bhp more than before. Torque has been increased too, rising by 10Nm to 550Nm. Audi claims that this helps the R8 RWD to achieve the 0-60mph sprint in 3.5 seconds and reach a 204mph top speed.

Available as either a coupe or drop-top Spyder, the R8 RWD benefits from an aluminium body and the widespread use of carbon fibre reinforced plastic panels which combine to help keep the car’s weight as low as possible. Much the same as the previous car, the new R8 RWD utilises a seven-speed automatic gearbox and a mechanical limited-slip differential.

The R8 RWD acts as the entry point to Audi’s range of supercars, but packs a long list of standard equipment including 19-inch forged alloy wheels and a 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit system.

Audi has also introduced a new ‘Edition’ version of the RWD. It gains a higher level of standard equipment, including 20-inch cast aluminium wheels finished in a bronze colour, Nappa leather-trimmed seats and an upgraded Bang & Olufsen stereo.
