The Beetle is one of the most recognisable cars in the world and is certainly the most iconic in Volkswagen’s range. First produced in 1938, the Beetle is now only rivalled by the Golf as the marque’s most successful model.
The distinctive Beetle shape is augmented by body-coloured bumpers and (electrically heated and adjustable) door mirrors, plus complementary black door handles. Black is the vehicle’s standard livery, with Tornado Red, Blue Silk Metallic and Pure White among a range of colourful options. Lighting includes range-adjustable headlights and a high-mounted brake light. Design trims add 17-inch Orbit alloy wheels and front fog lamps. Dune grades feature bespoke off-road styling, including unique colours and special decals.
A four-person cabin comes with a telescopic three-spoke steering wheel and adjustable front seats. Other standard features include power-assisted and speed-sensitive steering, electric front windows, a heated rear windscreen and air conditioning. Sliding back-row seats provide easy access to the rear. With those seats upright, the Beetle possesses a 310-litre boot. With seats folded, cargo capacity increases to 905 litres. Design grades come with a multi-function leather-trimmed steering wheel. Sport trims feature front sports seats and two-zone climate control.
Entry-level Beetles offer a choice of 2.0-litre diesel and 1.2-litre petrol engines. The former, a very efficient 110bhp option, returns as much as 65.7mpg and a 112g/km CO2 emission figure. Available with Sport grades and above is a 2.0-litre petrol unit that produces 220bhp and 350Nm of torque. Models fitted with this engine can go from 0-60mph in less than seven seconds and achieve a top speed of 145mph.
An eight-speaker sound system includes DAB digital radio, a CD player, AUX ports and iPod and MP3 player compatibility. Design grades add Bluetooth® connectivity. An Anti-lock Braking System, Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, Electronic Stability Control and Hill Hold are standard driving aids. Front and rear parking sensors are available with Sport trims. The Beetle is constructed with a rigid safety cell, featuring front and rear crumple zones. Other safety elements include seatbelt pre-tensioners and reminders, ISOFIX child-seat anchor points, whiplash-minimising head restraints and multiple airbags.
