The highly regarded Volkswagen Transporter comes in many guises, one of which is the people-carrying Shuttle.

Technology and Interior

The Shuttle S provides plenty of head, shoulder and leg room for each passenger. Front-row occupants benefit from reach-and-rake-adjustable seats that also offer lumbar support. The driver further benefits from a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel. Standard features include electric front windows, a heated rear window (with wash-and-wipe functionality) and rear-seat reading lights.

A five-inch colour touchscreen provides the interface to a sound system that includes an AM/FM radio, a DAB radio and a CD player. Bluetooth®, AUX and SD connectivity is provided too. Driver aids include an Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Stability Programme, Hill Hold Assist and Driver Alert System. Passive safety features comprise height-adjustable seatbelts and head restraints and driver and passenger airbags.

Exterior design

The flexible Shuttle comes in two dimensions: short wheelbase and long wheelbase. Whichever you choose, each model features driver and passenger side sliding doors, providing easy access, and electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors. There are six standard liveries available: Candy White, Pure Grey, Deep Ocean, Ontario Green, Bright Orange and Cherry Red, with a wide range of optional metallic hues obtainable too.

Performance

A range of 2.0-litre diesel engines is available for the Shuttle S. The most fuel-efficient option is a 101bhp unit which returns 48.7mpg and a 151g/km CO2 emission figure. A more potent 148bhp unit produces 340Nm of torque and a top speed of 113mph. The Start/Stop system prevents unnecessary fuel consumption by automatically switching the engine off when it isn’t required.
