Swansway Volkswagen Commercial MOTs

After the first three years of registration, an annual MOT becomes a legal requirement for all Volkswagen vans. Swansway Volkswagen is on hand to keep all of your commercial vehicles roadworthy. Inspections are done by the Volkswagen-trained technicians on-site, and we will issue your new MOT certificate on passing.

They will also separately list and inform you of any 'advisory' or 'minor' items that will require attention in the near future so you can keep an eye on them.

Can I help my Van Pass its MOT?

Around 1.5 million vehicles fail their MOT due to simple faults such as faulty bulbs or empty screen washer fluid. It's possible to anticipate most of these issues before your MOT is due, with a few simple checks.

X
Headlights and Indicators Check that all of your car’s lights function properly – headlights, sidelights, rear lights, hazard lights and indicators.

X
Brake lights Press the brake pedal and ask a friend to check that the rear brake lights come on – including any supplementary brake strip light.

X
Number plate Make sure that the number plate is clean and legible.

X
Wheels and tyres Check that wheels and tyres are undamaged and above the minimum legal tyre tread depth, 1.6mm.

X
Seats and Seatbelts Test movement of the seat and inspect the seatbelt's full length for damage.

X
Windscreen Any damage larger than 40mm will result in an immediate fail, so look out for stone chips and cracks.

X
Wipers Make sure your wipers are able to keep your windscreen clean – any tears or holes in the wiper rubber can be an MOT fail.

X
Screenwash Top up before taking the car in for an MOT test

X
Horn Give a short blast of the horn

X
Engine fluid and fuel Make sure your car is filled with enough fuel and engine oil.

The cost of a van MOT can vary, depending on the gross weight. For example, the fee for goods vehicles up to 3,000kg gross weight is capped at £54.85, while vans from 3,000kg to 3,500kg can only cost up to £58.60.

Circumstances, where you are allowed to drive without an MOT are very limited. Being caught driving without a valid MOT certificate could result in a police caution, but in some cases it can carry the penalty of a large fine.

On the Gov.UK website you can check the past results of a vehicle’s MOT tests, including:

  • if it passed or failed
  • the mileage recorded when it was tested
  • where each test was done
  • what parts failed, and if any parts had minor problems

A van needs it’s first MOT when it is three years old. If you are unsure when this date is, you can find out the vehicles registration date online.

An MOT test will typically take between 45 and 60 minutes. However, if there are faults that need to be fixed, your van is likely to be out of action for longer.

If you're not sure when your MOT expiry date is, you can check your MOT date for free online. You just need your vehicle's number plate.
