Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ)

What is ULEZ?

In a bid to improve London's air quality, a new Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) was introduced to the capital on 8th April 2019.

Where is affected?

Covering the same area as the congestion charge, it sets tighter emissions restrictions - and vehicles that don't comply will need to pay a daily charge for entering the zone, in addition to the Congestion Charge.

From 25 October 2021, the ULEZ is expanding from central London to create a single, larger zone up to, but not including, the North Circular Road (A406) and South Circular Road (A205).

If your vehicle does not meet the ULEZ standards, the charges for using it in the area are as follows:

  • Cars - £12.50 per day
  • Motorcycles - £12.50 per day
  • Vans and minibuses - £12.50 per day
  • Lorries, buses and vehicles over 3.5 tonnes - £100 per day

Penalty charges of up to £1,000 apply if you fail to pay the charge, which runs from midnight to midnight all year.

Which vehicles are exempt?

Petrol cars registered after 2005 and diesels registered after September 2015 generally meet the standards required, so no charge would apply*
