Jeep 4X4 Capabilities

The all-new Cherokee is available with Active Drive I which cleverly switches between Front Wheel Drive and 4x4 when required and Selec-Terrain® for optimum traction under different road conditions. It is also the first mid-size SUV to feature rear-axle disconnect, resulting in reduced energy loss when 4x4 capability isn’t needed and improving fuel efficiency. The rear-axle disconnect seamlessly switches between two- and four-wheel drive for full-time torque management and does not require input from the driver.

The Jeep® Active Drive II 4x4 system with low-range is great for extra low-speed traction. It also has a neutral mode for flat towing behind an Recreational Vehicle. *Active Drive II available later in model year on Limited trim level only.

When tyre slippage is detected, as much as 100% of available torque is instantly routed to the axle with the most traction. Compass 4x4 is fit for purpose on all the terrains of modern life. At its heart is the innovative Freedom Drive I 4WD system which optimises on and off road driving performance at the simple flick of a switch.

Jeep® Compass Limited and North models, with a 6-speed manual transaxle or fully automatic transmission both feature selectable four-wheel-drive lock. This state-of-the-art electronic system anticipates the need for added traction and responds to wheel-slippage by transferring power to the rear wheels, whilst modulating the rear-wheel to contribute to vehicle stability in cornering situations. The system also saves fuel by operating only on demand when on-road, thereby minimizing power-robbing friction and inertia. The off-road mode is activated by pulling the chrome T-handle switch labelled 4WD LOCK in the centre console. This mode dictates that the electronic sends the maximum amount of torque to the rear axle for improved traction. Total Jeep® control.
