EV Charging Infrastructure

One of the main concerns drivers have over switching to electric vehicles is what EV charging infrastructure is available to them. There are four main ways you will be able to charge your car and most are at your convenience:

  • At home.
  • At your place of work.
  • At your destination (car parks, supermarkets, service stations, etc.).
  • On the street.

According to the Department for Transport, 59,670 public charging ports were installed in the UK as of 1st April 2024. Compared to 1st January 2024, this is an increase of 5,993 (11%). Since 2015, there has been a dramatic increase in the amount of public chargers available to those who own an electric vehicle. Of the total 59,670 public chargers:

  • 59% of them offer 3 to 8kW of power (usually the type of power you would get with a home charger).
  • 21% of them offer 8 to 49kW of power (the most common outage for public chargers).
  • 12% offer 50 to 149kW of power (used for supermarket car parks).
  • 8% offer a power of 150kW plus.

Where can I charge my car?

EV charging infrastructure is broken down into location categories which take into account where they are, who can access it and what service they offer. These categories include:

  • Destination - these chargers are typically found at the end of a journey or where the driver is expected to stop for a prolonged period of time. This means they will be located in car parks, leisure centres, shopping areas and educational establishments.
  • En route - these chargers are located in places along your journey. This means they are located in motorway services, fuel stations and electric forecourts.
  • On street - these chargers are found on residential streets for the residents and their guests.
  • Other areas - some chargers are located in semi-public areas where access isn't as straightforward, such as workplaces or dealership courts.

As the switch to electric becomes more prominent as we get closer to the 2035 ICE ban, the EV charging infrastructure will expand further to cater to electric vehicles - you may have already noticed changes to your local garden centre or supermarket car park.
