Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs)

A BEV, Battery Electric Vehicle, is a pure electric vehicle. So basically it only runs on electric and nothing else. Read on to find out more about BEVs.

What is a battery electric vehicle?

A battery electric vehicle runs solely on an electrically rechargeable battery. Instead of the conventional combustion engine you will have a battery instead.

Because there is no internal combustion engine, BEVs make very little noise and can stop and start very quickly due to the nature of electric vehicles. In addition, they don’t continue to burn through the energy when the vehicle stops moving because there is no need to use the chemical energy stored in the battery packs. As such, they’re perfect for city driving because they can stop and start without losing efficiency.

Other terms you may find used to describe a BEV are pure electric and only-electric, but they mean the same thing. Sometimes people may also refer to a BEV as an all-electric vehicle, which is true, however the term all-electric vehicle (AEV) also includes fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).

What kind of range does a BEV have?

Most BEVs will have an effective driving range between 100 to 150 miles, but some higher-end models can easily exceed 300 miles on a single charge. This is perfect for everyday driving, but you may need to recharge if you’re travelling a long distance. Thankfully, this is much easier to do nowadays since most gas stations will also have support for BEVs.

As electric vehicle technology improves, we can generally expect the average mileage to increase. In 2011, the median range for an electric vehicle was just 68 miles. In 2020, that number has increased to 259 miles. For an exact range, we suggest taking a look at various BEVs that we offer. How long does it take to charge a BEV?

When it comes to charging, a BEV will typically finish charging in around 8 to 12 hours. Older models may spend around an entire day charging, especially if the charger isn’t sufficient for the battery. However, fast charging models can reach a full charge in just an hour. It depends on the type of battery and also the charger being used. For some models that are equipped with fast-charging technology, they can be charged to around 80% in under 30 minutes.

Things to consider before buying a BEV

So if you’re thinking about buying a BEV, here are some considerations to keep in mind.

How much range do you need for your BEV?

Most people find that the range for their BEV is sufficient for everyday life. An average range of around 100 miles is still plenty for day-to-day driving and even some long-distance trips. As electric vehicle technology continues to be adopted and developed we can only expect the ranges to increase as well.

Do you have somewhere to charge your vehicle?

One of the key parts of owning an electric vehicle is where you're going to charge it. Check your local area to see if there are any charging stations close to you or even along your usual route that you could use to charge up. Perhaps your company has plans to install chargers you could use whilst at work. Or you may need to consider installing a charger at home.

How long do you expect to own a BEV?

BEVs run entirely on their battery which is great for fuel efficiency and lowering your carbon footprint. However, batteries will eventually need to be replaced, especially if you drive your BEV a lot. If you plan to keep your BEV for a long time, then you may be surprised to hear that battery replacements can cost upwards of £10,000 depending on their size. You may be able to offset some of these costs depending on the manufacturer and prices should lower as BEV technology improves.
