Over 25 years since its first adventure, the new Land Rover Discovery is now bolder and more distinguished than ever. Blending the agricultural and off-road capabilities of the iconic Defender with the sophistication of the Range Rover, the Discovery is Land Rover’s grandest and most versatile full-size SUV.
The Discovery looks like the luxury off-roader that it is, with a tall Land Rover-distinct clamshell bonnet, large headlight clusters and bright silver grille. Expansive glass windows, chunky arch extensions and sills, and striking 19-inch ten-spoke alloy wheels are iconic in profile and purposeful in stance. Choose from five trim options: the Discover GS, XS, XS Commercial, HSE and HSE Luxury. A body-coloured front bumper and wheel arches are offered as standard on the entry-level GS, while an upgrade to the HSE adds Xenon front headlights with LED signature and an electric sunroof with Alpine roof. Indulge in the HSE Luxury for 20-inch five-spoke Diamond Turned Gloss Black alloys, full-length black roof rails and Grand Black Lacquer veneer.
The Discovery keeps the practical utilitarian interior known to the model, but with sophisticated technology seamlessly integrated. Seven seats in stadium style offer unspoiled views of every journey and are available in grained leather on the XS trim and premium Windsor leather on the HSE and HSE Luxury. Extended leather packs on the HSE Luxury applies the same premium Windsor upholstery to the dash, instrument panel binnacle, door top rolls, door armrests and door pulls. The HSE trim also adds heated front and rear seats, eight-way electric driver and passenger seats, power lumbar adjust and driver’s seat memory. Preheat the cabin or introduce fresh air with the optimal timed climate, available on the HSE trim and up, so it is ready for you when you get in. Flexible seating arrangements mean there is plenty of room regardless of your choice of trim, with a 2,558-litre luggage capacity. This, combined with a 3,500kg towing capacity, means the Discovery is perfect for the weekend away or the trip of a lifetime.
A single 3.0-litre SDV6 advanced sequential turbodiesel engine powers the Discovery, with a healthy 252bhp on tap. An impressive 600Nm of torque gives the model enough muscle to get from 0-60mph in just 8.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 112mph. An eight-speed automatic transmission works with the turbodiesel to improve on-road performance, but it is off-track that the Discovery really shines. Four-corner independent air suspension features variable ride height and electronic cross-linking for a constant level ride height irrespective of load distribution, so raise it to off-road and hit the track. The Terrain Response also works to optimise the vehicle set-up, with five different settings for on-road or off-road driving situations.
Land Rover’s focus on more advanced technology upgrades in the Discovery 4 has not gone unnoticed. The XS trim and up feature a seven-inch high-resolution touchscreen and 11-speaker 380-watt Meridian audio system, along with HDD premium satellite navigation with off-road interface. Opt for the HSE Luxury to add a premium 17-speaker Meridian Surround Sound System and two eight-inch rear TV screens with wireless headphones. Five optional digital cameras provide a near 360-degree view, giving drivers the confidence to tackle any terrain. Other standard safety features focus on maintaining grip and stability in any driving condition, with Emergency Brake Assist providing extra support and reassurance offered in the form of full front, side and curtain airbags.
