Rachael Monfredi, our HR Director, talks about her first two years at Swansway Group

Two years on...

Group HR Director, Rachael Monfredi has just celebrated two years with Swansway, having come from working in a top 25 law firm as a specialist employment lawyer, how’s Rachael found the change?

When I came into the business I was extremely fortunate in having a brilliant HR team already in place; in my old role I’d worked alongside HR Directors, now I was on the other side of the fence and I must thank my wonderful HR team for helping make that transition so smooth and enjoyable.

I’ve found it fascinating to get to grips with just one business, learn about it from the inside-out and then create an HR strategy tailored to support and grow the business. I’m particularly proud of bringing the Graduate Sales Trainee Scheme to fruition; recognising that sales is an important role, that it takes more than ‘the gift of the gab’ and that a Swansway Graduate is a highly qualified, competent and qualified salesperson.

It’s great that for the fifth consecutive year we are high up in the Sunday Times Best Companies to Work For rankings and I’ve very much enjoyed getting to know team members around all our sites and understanding how all the roles mesh together. No two days are the same, but they all revolve around our people and pushing forward with my prime focus of recruiting for attitude rather than for specific skills.

Developing home-grown talent is something I’m really passionate about; I want us to recruit new team members who demonstrate the Swansway attitude, then we’re more than happy to teach them the skills they need.

I’m working with Heads of Business and Managers to extend our apprentice programme; there is a wealth of talent in the school leaver population who no longer see university as their preferred option. I want to see them joining us at Swansway and making a life-long career with us.

My top tip for managing stress is to stay calm and trust your team. Whatever your job throws at you, there’s nothing that you can’t manage with a cool head and the support of your colleagues!
